debate between barak obama and mitt romney is tomorrow night and the campaigns are doing whatever they can to get ready. actually i heard that the obama campaign is a little worried 'cause during his flight to nevada on sunday, the president apparently watched four hours of football instead of studying. [ laughter ] although it did mark the first time all year obama has seen something get passed. [ laughter ] >> steve: funny. >> brian: i did not hear that. is that the premise of that joke true? that he watched four hours of football? >> martha: you can also go back to the notion that it shouldn't take that much studying to get ready for this. >> steve: you should know. >> martha: they've been working on these issues, they've been campaigning on these issues across the country for months and months and months. does it really take that much studying to get ready for this? >> brian: is it wrong to disagree with martha? >> martha: absolutely. ask hemmer. >> brian: i think it's totally different when someone is coming at you and saying you're wrong about this and defending something yo

a big night.ntr romney face-to-face for the first time on stage with an estimated 60 million americans watching, just about the same amount that is watching us right now. >> reporter: a little shy of that. jenna: a little shy of that. most voters have already made up their minds. the candidates are out to win over a shrinking number of undecideds. the key for president obama to sit out his narrow lead without a mishap while governor romney apparently needs to shakeup the rape. we'll see what our fox news political analyst brit hume thinks about that. what are you watching for in the debate tonight? >> reporter: i mostly will be watching romney. i think this is a much more important event for him and the president. the president is i think a known quantity to most people. he would have to do something quite remarkable it seems to me to make people adjust their view of him in any meaningful way. romney is a relative newcomer to the scene although he's been doing this for a while and trying to get people's attention. he'll have more of it tonight than perhaps he's had. he is the one who i

thing governor rom romney has to do, they have to keep their foot on the accelerator. he had a terrific victory. but i wouldn't rest at all. looking forward to this thing, next week, next thursday night. that's going to be important. the second debate will be important. i heard someone say, governor romney, really, obama should be favored. he's good at that format, moving around. but how does he attack romney? they will tell him to do it. they are talking about bain capital, that reduce it's. >> greta: i thought he was smart not to do that -- he wants to look presidential. he doesn't want his fingerprints on petty and going after someone. i think it is same is true of governor romney, vis-a-vis president obama. they can flood the market with the super pacs. >> exactly, exactly. if the president goes at the 47% and bain capital and the tax returns, it diminishes the president and it reduces him from the presidential level. and it makes him look petty and it makes hymn him look not like his greatest asset is that people say he's a nice guy who has been doing his best. he gets into that mo

night. and i marked it as saying, this is the first time he's really left a mark on mitt romney. now, it wasn't a knockout blow or anything like that, not a knockdown, a moment when he was able to say something that showed that he was actually in denver for the debate because up until that moment, i'm not sure if he was pre-celebrating his anniversary, i don't know. but he had not tuned into the same debate that 67 million other people had tuned into. now, here is president obama touting what he's done for education. >> we've got a program called race to the top that has prompted reforms in 46 states around the country, raising standards, improving how we train teachers so now i want to hire another 100,000 new math and science teachers and create 2 million more slots in our community colleges so that people can get trained for the jobs that are out there right now. and i want to make sure that we keep tuition low for our young people. >> mike: and i want to make sure that everybody's christmas stocking is filled with everything they've wanted when it comes christmas time. one little

on defense all night. i've talked to a lot of people and they say the entire debate is about romney. romney needs to play to win. while president obama needs to play not to lose. as long as he can keep him on defense, which he can. the facts are on romney's side. i talked to a senior advisor and just saw the candidate, he is calm and in great spirits ready to go. >> bob: that is what they always say before debates. if you abandon your own vice president medicare proposals? >> dana: they answered that. >> bob: how so? >> andrea: i don't think he will let himself get trapped in the details, bob. he will take it to the president. the facts are on his side. all he has to do is bring up the promises that president obama made. all the promises that he hasn't kept. boston you want to be president, you have to come up with details, too. >> what about skating through on promising to bring down the deficit? he hasn't. he incressed by $45 trillion. what about promising to bring down unemployment? president obama will spend 90 minutes tonight from 9:00 to 10:55 or whatever time talking about how -- >>

to the races. i hope and i want to see that tomorrow night. will i? >>guest: i don't know if you will or not. i have been waiting for romney to come hitting the growth agenda and low rate flat tax-and-spending reductions and the other ways of bringing the national debt down. i have not seen it. the 4 percent tax rate came out i thought he said he was proud of paying 14 percent and everyone else should pay 14 percent. i shouldn't be the only one paying 14 percent. he did not do it that way. i hope this time he does. if he does the growth message like ronald reagan, he could win the election but it has to be truly credible and not appear as though he is apologetic. >>neil: what i learned on fox business network talking to these two retired senators, they recognize how surprisingly easy it is just to talk about a democrat in the indicate of sam nunn, slowing down the growth of entitlements and from senator bennett, a republican, closing loop hes and credits that allow some not to pay taxes at all. ronald reagan would tell you, it is not a tax hike. however, we get so dog mattic and fixed in our po

foreign policy is unraveling before our eyes on our tv screens. bill: governor romney will give a major foreign policy speech soon after the first debate ends. the first debate ends wednesday night, as you know. martha: marshalackburn has also criticized the white house response. she'll join us on what she thinks should happen next. we are getting reports of another homicide bombing killing 14 people, two of them americans. the bomber drove into a nato patrol. doug mcelway joins us live. it was a couple weeks ago the u.s. suspended patrols with afghan soldiers because of these insider attacks. have these joint patrols resumed now? >> reporter: they have. they resumed last thursday and the insider attacks have also resumed. not only the attack you just mentioned but also the suicide bomber attack, homicide bomber attack. the motorcycle laden with explosives drove into that marketplace. critics say this attacks reflect an obama foreign policy that refuses to acknowledge the reality on the ground. u.s. marines are tying tourniquets to their legs in hopes of surviving ied attacks before the

playing jinga in the run up to the start of the debate. mr. romney took it very easy. he did meet with senior staffers very easy. calming distractions and trying to relax what is going to be biggest audience and biggest night and biggest opportunity to really display what he can offer to the nation. and contrast it to president obama. peanut butter and honey was the meal of the day and went to the cheesecake factory all about not drilling, not doing the q and a type of stuff president obama did today. romney campaign wants to make sure he doesn't leave it in the locker room. they want him to show up at the debate. >> bill: the president and mrs. obama's anniversary, right, ed? >> it is, indeed. >> bill: happy anniversary to the first couple. 20 years they have been married? >> the president's staff says since they're not going to get a chance to celebrate tonight because it's pretty intensive night tonight. they are having other plans to deal with it tweeting each other today on twitter how much they love each other. it's a nice soft opportunity for the president to highlight his
